Realtor.com reported a $2,999 median monthly rent for Vero Beach in September 2026 and $2,700 for Indian River County. The city figure was $299 higher, or 11.07% above the county median.
That calculation compares broad advertised-rent medians. It does not control for property size, furnishing, lease length, seasonality, waterfront access, or property type. It is a geographic context point, not a matched housing-cost comparison.
The year-over-year signals differed
Vero Beach's median advertised rent was nearly flat year over year at -0.03%, while the county median was down 8.47%. The city median rose 3.41% month over month; the county median was unchanged.
Different community mixes can move the county figure. The page's community and ZIP rows also showed a wide range, reinforcing why an individual rental search should be narrowed.
Listing count is not occupancy
The provider reported 788 Vero Beach rental properties and 874 countywide. Those are public inventory counts, not vacancy rates or executed leases. A property can be advertised for seasonal, annual, furnished, or other terms that are not equivalent.
The numbers help describe available supply on the provider's platform. They do not establish landlord returns, tenant demand, or the lease rate a particular home will achieve.
Rent versus buy requires a fuller ledger
A serious rent-versus-buy comparison should include mortgage terms, taxes, insurance, association fees, maintenance, transaction costs, expected holding period, and the flexibility value of renting. The public rent median can anchor one side of the worksheet, but it cannot finish the analysis.
